Many times, writing can be a tedious and time-consuming job that can leave you almost asleep at the keyboard, after many hours. Even when you take short breaks, and pour the coffee to no end, this may happen. For when I feel in a Zombie state, I have a quick remedy that seems to work for me – Citrus spray. I spray it around the room, and a few minutes later, I feel focused and even re-energized. I used Pure Citrus, and eco-friendly and natural brand. It also comes in a mix of vanilla with citrus or lavender with citrus, but the main citrus aroma seems to overwhelm the vanilla and lavender scents, so you mostly smell the citrus. It works for me, it may work for you too. Just sharing this simple trick.
Me Who, What, Huh?
I guess it happens in your early forties, but suddenly, you find yourself questioning everything around you – the universe, society, career, friendships … and how you have lived your entire life. The only thing not being questioned is family – because you are stuck with it. Somehow, nothing seems to make sense, or at least, have the same meaning it had. It could be a dramatic experience for many, or an exciting period in your life. You can analyze everything to exhaustion and become depressed, or you can just enjoy the sudden jolt of enlightenment that seems to break you in halves.
Eventually, like everything, it will pass, and you will emerge once more. Depending on what you made of the experience, you will emerge strong or vulnerable – but no matter what, it is still you. I am convinced that midlife crisis happens for a reason – it is necessary to ground you once more, just as the “terrible twos” or the “challenging teens.” Will it happen around your sixties, eighties …? Who knows. Me Who, What, Huh?
Stepping Back to Move Forward
In the pursuit of our goals, many times we may stray from our path, by walking the road we think we must be on to achieve them. This may sound as a contradiction, but it is not. For example, you might have worked hard in trying to achieve your dreams, and suddenly realize, that the path you are on – the same path that is supposed to make those dreams possible – is taking you farther from them. How is that possible? Well, it is.
It has to do with approach. When you have a goal, there are many ways to work towards achieving it – many approaches, many paths. It happens that sometimes, one of those paths is not quite leading to what feels as “this is it” or “I am getting there.” You may even feel that you are getting sidetracked and going nowhere. In that case, you have to step back and take a look at the picture in front of you. It can be compared to looking at a painting – if you are too close to it, it becomes blurry; once you take a step back, you start seeing the picture once more. Our dreams are not so different from that example.
Learning when to step back is where it may be a bit tricky. When you are actively pursuing your dream, and you start feeling disconnected to it or just going trough the motions, that is a sign. It is telling you that you have to step back and reassess your path. A question that I ask myself is – “If I continue in this path, what will be the possible result?” This usually gives me a clue that lets me know that it is time to change the approach, without abandoning my goal. I may have to eliminate some things, keep others, or do something different. Sometimes, it is a matter of evaluating where you are and thinking of what set you on that path. Many times, the answer waits at the start.
Sometimes, it is hard to comprehend that just because an approach is not working as expected, it does not mean that you have to throw your entire plan away. In that case, it is necessary to step back to move forward.
A Crying Planet
The world seems to be in chaos, or at least, that is what the news I hear suggest. It is very sad what is happening to Japan and our brothers and sisters there. The Japanese have given us a lesson. I don’t hear sleuthing or rapes, or people turning against each other. I see brave citizens going through very hard and unimaginable times holding on to each other and keeping their spirits up, despite the size of the adversity afflicting their country. In their darkest hour, they have shine their light.
Natural disasters and man-made disasters are never good. We have created time bombs on this planet, and forgot about the power of Nature. What is happening in Japan, can happen any time to other developed countries – including our beloved USA. This is why countries should start rethinking and taking measures to lessen the damage already created. We have raped this planet! This planet, as a living organism and eco system, must restore itself – however that may be – another ice age or whatever …
I am tired of hearing about doomsday, the end of the world, Armageddon, and 2012. Don’t blame God, Christ, religion…, for something that is part of a natural occurrence and part man-made, as we have abused the resources of this planet. I consider myself a christian, but a responsible one. Maybe it is time we stop thinking about Armageddon and the end of the world and start living more responsible on this planet. Maybe we should get off our asses and do our part and stop thinking that God is the one who is responsible for fixing everything. He gave humanity a wonderful place to live and we have neglected our home. Then, we run scared to the closest pharmacy and the nearest website to buy iodine tablets in case the radiation in Japan reaches us on this side of the planet.
My heart goes out to our Japanese brothers and sisters who are going through such pain and hard times. Let’s help them however each one of us can – every little counts. Maybe we can start here in the Occident by not going nuts and exhausting the iodine tablet supply that the citizens of some Japan areas may need more. At times like this, we are one race – human.
Shakespeare a Day 18
“Can honour set-to a leg? No. Or an arm? No. Or take away the grief of a wound? No. Honour hath no skill in surgery, then? No. What is honour? A word. What is that word honour? Air.” – King Henry IV, Part I
It is what it is. A matter of the soul? the spirit? of love of the country? of the human condition?
Shakespeare a Day 17
“This above all; to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” – Hamlet
True words, as it is hard to be false to the world when we are true to ourselves. When we experience many back stabs in the course of our lives, we might tend to become a bit skeptical about trusting people; however, this is not the way to live fully, as it denies the essence of Love. By being true to yourself and putting out the best of you, the ball ends up on the other’s court – even when you experience deceit, you are at peace with yourself. In this world, the good and the bad coexists, and sometimes, wolves wear sheep’s attire – the only weapon against that is the satisfaction of being true to yourself.
Shakespeare a Day 16
“Who steals my purse steals trash; ’tis something, nothing; ‘Twas mine; ’tis his, and has been slave to thousands; But he that filches from me my good name robs me of that which not enriches him, and makes me poor indeed.” – Othello, the Moor of Venice
What’s in a name? Nothing – Everything. Once you have been branded, that’s it. After you lose everything, home, possessions, friends … you have your name, you have yourself. The last thing you want to lose is that.
Today, many people have lost a lot with the economic meltdown, more will keep losing this year; however, the last thing that will remain is your Spirit, much more than a branded name. Today, I can say this (and many with me) – “Who steals my purse steals trash;” however, no one can rob ME!
Shakespeare a Day 15
“That death’s unnatural that kills for loving.” – Othello, the Moor of Venice
Love, such a short and simple word, and so much goes into it. Most things we do during our days on Earth we do for Love – for love of someone, of something, for love of money, for love of success, for love of the planet, of its people, for love of material things … Whether that Love is right or wrong, in our minds, we do it just for Love. Crimes of passion are said to be committed out of Love – love that has sickened and crossed the line towards death. Even the denial of oneself for the pleasing of the loved one, is out of love. All is done in the name of Love. Love is pure, a higher essence; in our humanity, or twisted humanity, we corrupt it.
Today, think of it – what do you love? why do you love?
Shakespeare a Day 14
“Had all his hairs been lives, my great revenge had stomach for them all.” – Othello, The Moor of Venice
This line is full of emotion, vengeance and anger – both strong and powerful emotions that can take over the best of our humanity. It only takes a moment for those emotions to undo the best in us. As humans, we experience a ray of feelings and emotions that can shape our behavior; the real power rests in how we deal with them.
My favorite authors are the ones that can tell a good story but also let me feel the emotions through the words in the page.
Shakespeare a Day 13
“O Wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people in’t.” – The Tempest
We are wonders of creation. We are capable of the most sublime and beautiful art, but also of the most hideous acts of cruelty. This is what differentiate us and set us apart from other creatures here on Earth. Yes, we can be “goodly creatures” and “beauteous” – and it would certainly take a new world order.
